AP2HI Strengthens Its Plans to Achieve MSC Certification in Indonesia’s pole-and-line and handline tuna fisheries by Proposing 14 Unit of Assessment (UoA)s
AP2HI with support from IPNLF has identified 14 Units of Assessments (UoAs) in Indonesia’s pole-and-line and handline tuna fisheries. AP2HI will focus on transitioning these selected fisheries to MSC Certification in the near term by supporting its member companies to implement key improvement initiatives. The UoA’s were determined by assessing fishery geography, gear type, target tuna species, available fishery data, gaps to MSC, company engagement to achieve MSC, and compliance with the AP2HI Code of Conduct. The selected 14 UoA’s cover six geographic regions:
- Maluku Skipjack Pole & Line
- Maluku Yellofin Pole & Line
- Maluku Yellowfin Handline
- Banda Yellowfin Handline
- North Sulawesi & North Maluku Skipjack Pole & Line
- North Sulawesi & North Maluku Yellowfin Pole & Line
- North Sulawesi & North Maluku Yellowfin Handline
- West Papua Skipjack Pole & Line
- West Papua Yellowfin Pole & Line
- West Papua Yellowfin Handline
- North Flores Skipjack Pole & Line
- North Flores Yellowfin Pole & Line
- Flores Yellowfin Handline
- West Nusa Tenggara Skipjack Troll
There is opportunity to update these UoAs should there be a need to accommodate commitments from AP2HI members, and available data. Following on from the last FIP Steering Committee meeting, AP2HI and IPNLF will develop a FIP Action Plan for each UoA to address the issues that each fishery needs to tackle in order to prepare the fisheries for MSC Full Assessment, with support and collaboration from other FIP stakeholders.
