Government & industry synergies: MMAF and AP2HI sign Cooperation Agreement
Key to the Indonesian FIP, this new agreement highlights the industry-government partnership supporting Indonesia’s one-by-one tuna fishery
At the 3rd Bali Tuna Conference (BTC) and 6th International Coastal Business Forum (ICTBF) that took place in Bali on the 31st May & 1st June 2018, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) & Indonesian Pole & Line and Handline Fisheries Association (AP2HI) signed a Cooperation Agreement. The new agreement outlines how industry and government will work together with the pole-and-line and handline fisheries to achieve MSC certification in Indonesia. Together, through the Cooperation Agreement, MMAF and AP2HI will work to ensure that tuna stocks remain sustainable, to minimise the environmental impact of the fisheries and to support effective fisheries management. Coordination on some specific initiatives such as the data collection programme, the on-board observer programme, and the FIP implementation were also highlighted in the agreement. This reaffirmed collaboration between government and industry increases the momentum behind the ongoing work to achieve MSC accreditation for Indonesia’s one-by-one fishery, and AP2HI looks forward to working with MMAF, its members and its partners to achieve this shared ambition.
